How Titanium Is Anodized to Gold Color

The process used to make titanium appear gold (or other colors) is called anodizing (often mistakenly written as “iodized”). It’s an electrochemical process, not plating, and it’s widely used for professional body jewelry.

  1. Cleaning the Titanium
The titanium piece is thoroughly cleaned to remove oils, polishing compounds, and contaminants. Any residue will affect the color.
  2. Electrolyte Bath
The jewelry is placed in an electrolyte solution (commonly distilled water mixed with trisodium phosphate or baking soda).
  3. Electrical Current Applied
A DC power supply is used. The titanium jewelry is connected to the positive terminal (anode) and a conductive metal plate is connected to the negative terminal (cathode).
  4. Voltage Creates Oxide Layer
As voltage is applied, an oxide layer forms on the titanium surface. The thickness of this oxide layer determines the color due to light interference.
  5. Gold Color Voltage Range
Titanium appears gold around ~40–50 volts (varies slightly depending on the setup).

Key Things to Know about iodized Titanium

The color is not a coating and cannot chip or peel.
It is biocompatible and safe for body jewelry.
Only titanium and niobium can be anodized this way.
The color comes from light refraction through the oxide layer, not pigment.

Typical Titanium Anodizing Color Voltages

  • ~15–20V → Straw / light gold
  • ~40–50V → Gold
  • ~55–60V → Purple
  • ~65–70V → Blue
  • ~75–80V → Teal
  • ~90V → Green

Important for Piercing Jewelry

Most high-end piercing jewelry (including brands used in studios) uses anodized titanium rather than plating because it maintains implant-grade biocompatibility.
