Piercing Aftercare

Congratulations, you rocked it!

Now let’s talk about Aftercare.

The DO’s and the DON’Ts of Aftercare following your Nina Wynn piercing

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”

It is your responsibility to keep your new piercing clean. We recommend a packaged sterile saline solution listing the only ingredient as 0.09% sodium chloride. Neilmed spray is a good option.

It's normal and expected for your fresh piercing to be red, sore, and sensitive. It's also normal for your piercing to secrete some kind of secretion/crust whether it's red/orange/whitish-yellow or clear, NOT pus.

DON’T DO THIS STUFF, JUST DON’T.…

  • DO NOT twist, turn or snag your jewelry. The more you leave it alone and keep it clean, the faster it will heal.
  • DO NOT use any kind of alcohol, peroxide, bactine, bacitracin, iodine, antibacterial soaps or ointments.
  • DO NOT use contact lens saline solution.
  • DO NOT mix your own salt solution.
  • DO NOT use towels as they may harbor bacteria and will snag on the jewelry.
  • DO NOT submerge in any bodies of water such as pools, lakes, oceans, hot-tubs, or baths for at least three weeks. Showers are great and can be taken straight away. Make sure your piercing is the last thing you rinse off to ensure no soaps or conditioners are left on your piercing.
  • DO NOT sleep on your fresh piercing. Try a Nina Wynn Piercing Pillow. When you lay on it, your ear will go in the hole thereby relieving pressure.
  • DO NOT hang charms or any objects from your jewelry until it is fully healed.

THINGS TO DO. YES, DO THESE THINGS….

  • DO clean your piercing 2-3 times a day with Neilmed Saline Spray  for the first week and then twice a day for the remainder of your healing process.
  • DO eat a nutritious diet and get enough sleep. The healthier your lifestyle the faster you will heal.
  • DO dry with clean disposable lint-free paper products.
  • DO shower.
  • DO maintain cleanliness of phones, headphones, eyeglasses, helmets, hats and anything that comes in contact with the piercing.
  • DO use caution when styling your hair and alert your stylist to your new piercing.
  • Do try a Nina Wynn Piercing Pillow. When you lay on it, your ear will go in the hole thereby relieving pressure.
  • Do use a drop of pure EMU oil once per day after a cleaning with Neilmed. Emu oil contains high concentrations of essential fatty acids and other nutrients. These nutrients seem to promote healing by reducing inflammation, providing pain relief and helping nourish your skin.

THINGS TO AVOID….

  • AVOID touching your piercing. If you must touch it, make sure you thoroughly wash your hands beforehand.
  • AVOID overcleaning as this can slow healing.
  • AVOID smoking. Cigarette smoking and the use of nicotine slows healing SIGNIFICANTLY. Excessive nicotine use will slow healing by up to 4x !!
  • AVOID undue trauma such as friction from clothing, excessive motion, playing with the jewelry as this can cause scar tissue formation.
  • AVOID beauty and personal care products on or around the piercing including cosmetics, lotions, sprays, etc.

THINGS TO CONSIDER…

A piercing might seem healed before the healing process is complete. The interior is slower to heal than the exterior and remains fragile. Be patient and keep cleaning.

Healed piercings may close in minutes. DO keep jewelry in - DO NOT leave the hole empty.

Most piercings utilize a post that is a bit larger than what you eventually need. This is to allow room for swelling and cleaning. At about 3-6 weeks the swelling should subside.

Ear Lobe Piercings can take anywhere from 4-6 months to completely heal and a daith, rook, tragus or any cartilage piercing can take 9-12 months or longer so please be patient.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your piercer.

HAPPY HEALING

At Nina Wynn, we want our clients to have the best piercing experience possible. By following our aftercare recommendations and using these high-quality products, our clients can feel confident in their piercing's safety and successful healing.

If you encounter signs of an adverse reaction such as infection, allergic reaction, illness with fever, or an active disease process, please contact your Physician. In very rare instances and despite all preventative measures taken an abscess may form due to an infection below the surface. Please discuss with your physician if you should leave in quality jewelry, change it out to an appropriate inert substitute or to remove it entirely.

Piercings are not considered permanent and can be removed at any time. Side effects of being pierced include, but are not limited to; sore skin, itching, redness, swelling, bruising, minor scabbing, scar formation.

Should you no longer wish to have the piercing, simply remove the jewelry with clean hands and continue cleaning the piercing until the hole closes. In most cases only a small mark will remain.

Thank you for choosing us.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.
