Does Permanent Jewelry Hurt? What the Welding Process Feels Like

Does Permanent Jewelry Hurt? What the Welding Process Feels Like

Does permanent jewelry hurt? Learn what the fitting and welding process feels like, why the spark does not touch the skin and what to expect during the appointment.

Does Permanent Jewelry Hurt? Quick Answer

Permanent jewelry should not hurt when it is fitted and welded correctly. The service does not involve a needle, puncture or piercing. A precision welder closes a small metal connecting ring while a protective barrier sits between the jewelry and the skin.

Most clients spend more time choosing the chain and confirming the fit than thinking about the weld. The pulse is brief, and the connection is inspected immediately afterward.

The spark is used on the jewelry connection. It is not intended to touch, pierce or burn the skin.

What Does the Welding Spark Feel Like?

Many people notice little more than the awareness that a quick pulse occurred. The exact sensation can vary with the position of the jewelry and the individual, but it should not feel like a piercing or tattoo.

Correct positioning matters. Remaining still for the brief welding moment helps the specialist keep the connection exactly where it belongs.

Is Permanent Jewelry Like Getting a Piercing?

Permanent Jewelry Piercing
Closes a metal connecting ring Creates an opening through tissue
No needle or puncture Uses a needle or another approved piercing method
No healing period Requires healing and aftercare
Removed by cutting the welded ring Jewelry is removed from a healed or healing channel

The two services are physically different. For a step-by-step description of the clasp-free process, read How Does Permanent Jewelry Work?.

Can a Permanent Bracelet Feel Too Tight?

Discomfort is more likely to come from fit than from welding. A bracelet should move naturally without constricting the wrist. Too much slack, however, can make the chain more likely to catch.

Speak up during fitting. It is much easier to adjust the chain before the connecting ring is welded.

The Permanent Bracelet Sizing & Fit Guide explains wrist measurement, movement and what to do if a bracelet feels too loose or too tight.

What If You Have Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin and metal allergies are separate from the welding sensation. Someone may be comfortable during the service but react later to an alloy that does not suit them.

Share known allergies or previous jewelry reactions before choosing a chain. Material transparency and an appropriate fit are important parts of a comfortable experience.

Read Permanent Jewelry for Sensitive Skin and review the Permanent Jewelry Waiver before service.

What Happens During the Appointment?

01

Select

Choose the chain, metal and optional charms or connectors.

02

Fit

The specialist adjusts the length and confirms comfort.

03

Protect

A barrier is placed between the connection and the skin.

04

Weld

A brief pulse closes the small connecting ring.

After the weld, the specialist checks the connection and movement of the piece. There is no healing period, but the chain should still be treated as fine jewelry.

When Should Permanent Jewelry Be Removed?

Permanent jewelry can be removed whenever needed. Medical procedures, MRI facility policies, workplace rules, sports and personal preference are all valid reasons.

Cut the small connecting ring rather than the decorative chain when possible, and save all components for inspection. See Permanent Jewelry Aftercare for removal and re-welding guidance.

Choosing a Comfortable Permanent Jewelry Experience

Comfort depends on more than the weld. Chain weight, material, placement, fit and lifestyle all affect how the jewelry feels after the appointment.

Explore the full permanent-jewelry experience at participating Nina Wynn locations.

Can Permanent Jewelry Feel Uncomfortable After the Appointment?

The welding step should not be painful, but comfort also depends on fit. A bracelet that is too tight can press into the wrist when the body warms or swells, while too much slack can increase snagging and repeated movement.

Temporary awareness of a new piece is different from persistent pain, pinching, swelling or numbness. If the jewelry becomes uncomfortable, do not keep wearing it simply because it is called permanent. The connecting ring can be cut and the piece can be inspected or resized.

The Permanent Bracelet Sizing & Fit Guide explains how much movement a bracelet should have and what to do when the fit changes.

Does Removing or Re-Welding Permanent Jewelry Hurt?

Removal should not hurt when the small connecting ring is moved away from the skin and cut carefully. Re-welding uses the same brief jewelry-only pulse as the original appointment after the piece has been inspected and re-fitted.

Professional help is the safer choice when the ring is difficult to reach, the jewelry is tangled, the area is swollen or you are not comfortable using a cutter near the body.

Questions to Ask Before the Weld

  • Which metal and chain style are being used?
  • How much movement should the finished piece have?
  • Where is the welded connecting ring located?
  • How can the piece be removed if necessary?
  • What should you do if the chain snags or breaks?
  • Where can you go for inspection or re-welding?

Review the Permanent Jewelry Waiver before service and use the Permanent Jewelry Aftercare Guide for cleaning, removal and re-welding guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does permanent jewelry hurt?

Permanent jewelry should not hurt when properly fitted and welded. The pulse closes a small metal ring above a protective barrier and does not pierce the skin.

Does permanent jewelry burn your skin?

The welding pulse is applied to the metal connection, not directly to the skin. Correct placement and a protective barrier are important parts of the process.

Is getting a permanent bracelet painful?

The service should not be painful. Discomfort is more likely to come from an overly tight fit or an unsuitable material than from the welding moment.

Is permanent jewelry the same as a piercing?

No. Permanent jewelry does not puncture tissue or create a healing channel. It closes a jewelry connection with a precision weld.

Can I remove permanent jewelry if it becomes uncomfortable?

Yes. The small welded connecting ring can be carefully cut, and the chain may be eligible for re-welding later.

Was out exploring around with my girlfriend and came across the pop-up market. Was guided through a couple options and given suggestions based uniquely on my girlfriend's bar tending work (frequent water exposure, hand washing, etc), and we walked away with a great piece that she loves and should last quite a while!

Fast, helpful, and professional service. Was fun and friendly. Shared all the information we needed, including warranty!

Thank you!

Nina provides the best customer service ! An earring stone had some discoloration and she was so quick to replace the entire earring.
The jewelry might be on the pricier side but she stands behind her product and always makes it right for her customers.

My mom and I have been to Nina’s shop several times, and we’ve always had a great experience. I got a permanent bracelet from her about a year ago, and it still looks brand new. I wear it all the time, and it’s held up really well while staying just as shiny as when I first got it.

What has always stood out to me is how kind and helpful Nina is. She takes the time to talk with you and make sure you’re happy with what you choose. Her jewelry is beautiful, and I love that all of the pieces are her own designs.

I absolutely love my permanent bracelet from here! I have several from different places, and this one is by far my favorite. I chose the multicolor tourmaline bracelet and get compliments on it all the time — it’s such a unique and beautiful piece. All future permanent jewelry purchases I’ll be getting from this shop!

I came here to get a rook piercing and got so much more! Nina and Matthew were the sweetest people. They helped me pick the perfect, beautiful earring for my rook, helped me pick a new earring for a separate piercing that wasn’t healing (not pierced here) and even gave my 3 year old daughter a little bracelet for being so patient while I was doing everything. If I could give them 10 stars I would! By far the best piercing experience I have ever had! I loved that I wasn’t rushed and not pressured into anything!!! Best place for a piercing!

I was unable to actually go in here because it's by appointment only. Not sure how people can browse the jewelry if they have to schedule an appointment. Tried to check out the scheduling at the door, but the website wouldn't load.

Nina and Darby(piercer) are amazing!!! I have gotten 5 piercings over 2 sessions, and the experience was exceptional. The attention to detail on placement, and styling and ease of the piercing was the absolute best. One of my jewelry pieces got caught and broke that I bought at my piercing session with them, and they replaced it without hesitation. Top quality earrings to select from, and it is very hard not to get more piercings!!!

My experience at Nina Wynn was phenomenal. Darby worked with me during my appointment and was an absolute gem! I went in for an ear mapping and piercing session and Darby was so helpful and informative from beginning to end. She really took the time to curate a look that balanced the anatomy of my ear and masked an error from a previous piercer. Darby was so knowledgeable, kind, and very clearly passionate about her craft. She took the time to walk me through the piercing process, sterilization process, and after care recommendations. I was so nervous to get a cartilage piercing initially but, Darby made me feel so at ease. I couldn’t believe how smooth the process was! The jewelry selection at Nina Wynn is incredible and well worth the price tag. Darby helped me pick out the most beautiful emerald earring for my conch piercing and it’s my new obsession! I will be returning from Michigan in a few months for my downsizing appointment and can’t wait to add more piercings as well! I can’t recommend this place enough! 10/10!

The people here are so kind!
I got my helix pierced and bought a hoop. I do not know a lot about piercings. Months had passed and my hoop and piercing were not healing. Mind you this hoop was over $150!!

Eventually a friend told me to switch it out with a stud. I got one off Etsy, and started the healing process over. It's been fine since then but I feel like I was misled initially. Long story short, do your own research before. The jewelry they have is very pretty, just needed someone to tell me not to start a cartilage piercing with a hoop.
