What Is Piercing Downsizing?
Downsizing changes the wearable post length when the initial allowance is no longer appropriate. It can be part of follow-up care before full healing. A decorative top may be retained when it is compatible with the new post and appropriate for the piercing.
A fit check is the first step, rather than a promise that your jewelry will be shortened. The piercer can assess whether to change the post, keep the current jewelry or recommend another next step.
When Should I Ask for a Fit Check?
- The initial post projects farther after swelling has reduced.
- Hair, towels or headphones repeatedly catch the jewelry.
- The back or top seems to press into the skin.
- You have reached the follow-up recommended by your original piercer.
A visible post alone does not tell you which length to buy. Tightness or jewelry pressing into the skin is a reason to request an assessment; it does not mean a shorter post is the right choice. Avoid changing the length yourself while the piercing is healing, sore, swollen or changing.
What Can a Downsizing Fit Check Include?
