Solid Gold vs. Gold-Plated Flat Back Earrings: What Are You Buying?

Editorial illustration of a gold diamond decorative top beside a titanium flat-back post: know what you are buying.

Read the listing in three separate lines

Component Find this in the description Avoid assuming
Decorative top Solid gold alloy, a coating or another named material. That a gold color identifies construction.
Post Material, gauge, wearable length and matching connection. That a gold top comes with a gold post.
Included items One earring or a pair, included titanium post and optional upgrades. That every accessory in a photograph is included.

The featured Nina Wynn listings were rechecked October 17, 2026. They describe a 5 mm titanium post included with the decorative top and gold posts as optional separate purchases. Select the complete assembly with a professional piercer when fit or healing is involved.

A gold-colored flat back does not tell the whole story. Before choosing an earring, look at three things: the decorative top, the post that passes through your piercing, and what is included with your purchase.

This guide focuses on flat-back piercing jewelry. It explains the difference between gold alloy and a gold coating, then shows how those details apply to actual Nina Wynn designs.

The key distinction: a 14K gold decorative top can be paired with a titanium post. That is a mixed-material earring, not a gold-plated top. Each component should be described separately.

Similar appearance. Different construction.

14K gold is an alloy, not pure gold. It contains 14 parts gold out of 24, or approximately 58.3% gold, mixed with other metals. In a component made from 14K gold alloy, that alloy is the component's metal rather than simply a gold layer covering a different core. The FTC explains karat marks and gold descriptions.

Schematic cutaway: 14K gold alloy throughout on the left; a gold layer over a different metal core on the right.
Compare the material beneath the surface, not just the color. This illustration is not to scale; the coating is enlarged to make the difference visible.

Gold-plated jewelry has a gold surface layer over another metal. The underlying material and coating specifications matter. A yellow surface alone cannot tell you whether you are looking at gold alloy, a gold coating, or colored titanium.

Also ask what a seller means by solid. The FTC distinguishes solid from hollow construction; the term does not mean pure 24K gold. For a flat-back earring, confirm both the construction and the material of each part.

Your flat-back earring, explained

The threadless example below has two removable pieces: a decorative top with its pin attached, and a hollow labret post with a fixed flat disc. The pin is not a separate loose connector, and the rear disc does not unscrew in this example.

A gold decorative top with an attached smooth pin faces the hollow opening of a titanium labret; the flat rear disc stays attached to the post.
Threadless example only; not to scale. The attachment pin may differ in material from the decorative top. Check the specific component details.

Decorative top: the visible design and its setting. Labret post: the component that passes through the piercing. A material description for one does not automatically describe the other. Check the attachment pin's material when that detail matters to your selection.

Threadless and internally threaded are different connection systems. Do not assume that a shared name makes every brand or component compatible. See our threadless versus threaded jewelry guide for the mechanism comparison.

INCLUDED WITH THE FEATURED DESIGNS

14K gold top + titanium post

Each of the four earrings featured below is sold individually with one 5 mm titanium labret post included at no extra cost.

OPTIONAL SEPARATE PURCHASE

Choose a 14K gold post

A 14K gold labret is available as a separate purchase. Confirm the compatible connection and the right wearable length before ordering.

Included does not mean universally suitable. The 5 mm length describes the supplied post, not a fit recommendation for every ear or a new piercing. Use the flat-back size chart to understand the measurements, and ask a professional piercer to check your fit.

Gold jewelry materials at a glance

Use this chart to understand a listing. It compares construction, not whether an item is suitable for your particular piercing.

Material descriptions and the questions to ask
Material or construction What it means What to check before buying
14K gold component The component's metal is a 14K gold alloy, rather than only a gold coating over a different core. Which parts are gold? Are the post, pin, or any surface finishes different?
Gold-plated A gold layer covers another metal. The underlying metal, coating specifications, care instructions, and intended use.
Gold vermeil A defined gold-plated construction with a sterling-silver base. The silver base and compliance with the applicable gold-purity and coating-thickness requirements.
Gold-filled A gold-alloy layer is mechanically bonded to a base metal. The stated gold proportion and karat. Gold-filled does not mean gold throughout.
Gold-colored anodized titanium Titanium colored through anodizing, not a gold coating. The titanium specification, disclosed finish, compatible components, and fit.

Gold terminology is explained in the FTC Jewelry Guides. For body-jewelry material guidance, consult the Association of Professional Piercers.

Gold-colored titanium is not necessarily gold-plated

Titanium can be anodized to produce different colors, including a gold-like appearance. Anodizing and gold plating are different treatments. The featured Nina Wynn product listings note that titanium may be anodized for a gold look; color alone should not be used to identify the post's material.

Choose the next step for your piercing

For new or healing piercings, visit a professional piercer. For healed piercings, confirm materials, fit, and component compatibility.
A material comparison cannot replace an individual fitting.

New or healing piercing

Visit a qualified local piercing studio for jewelry selection and fitting. Do not choose initial jewelry based only on its color, karat stamp, or included post length.

Established, healed piercing

Check the top, post, connection, and your established fit before purchasing. Ask for help when you are unsure, rather than forcing a component that does not fit.

The Association of Professional Piercers advises against gold-plated, gold-filled, and vermeil jewelry in fresh piercings. Its gold guidance calls for 14K or higher, nickel- and cadmium-free material alloyed for biocompatibility; it also identifies specific appropriate titanium grades. A generic material label alone is not enough. Read the APP's initial-jewelry guidance.

Compare care and value, not just price

Gold plating can wear away; the rate depends on the coating and how the piece is worn. There is no useful universal promise that every plated earring lasts a fixed number of months. A gold-alloy component is a different construction, but that does not make the complete earring maintenance-free. See the FTC's explanation of plated jewelry.

A finish can also be applied to genuine gold alloy. For example, white gold is often rhodium-plated. That surface treatment does not turn the underlying white-gold component into a base-metal imitation. Ask about the alloy and finish separately. GIA explains gold colors and rhodium finishes.

When comparing two listings, match the gemstone, top dimensions, quantity, and included post before deciding what the price difference represents. A single earring with a post is not the same purchase as a top-only listing or a pair. Follow the care instructions for the complete design, including its gemstones.

Shop by the details that matter

These four Nina Wynn designs show how gold color, gemstones, and top size vary while the included post remains a separately described component. Product measurements below are the listed decorative-top sizes, not individual stone diameters.

Questions about gold flat-back earrings

Does a titanium post mean my gold top is gold-plated?

No. The post and decorative top are separate components. A 14K gold top can be paired with a titanium labret; read the material description for each rather than treating the assembly as one metal.

Is 14K gold the same as pure gold?

No. 14K is a gold alloy containing approximately 58.3% gold. Pure gold is 24K. A karat description tells you gold content, not whether the post or attachment pin is made from the same material.

Does every flat back come with a gold post?

No. The four featured Nina Wynn designs include a 5 mm titanium post. A 14K gold labret is an optional separate purchase. Always check the specific product's included components.

Is the included 5 mm post right for my piercing?

Not necessarily. It is the supplied length, not a universal fitting recommendation. Review our gauge and post-length guide and have a professional piercer confirm the appropriate fit.
