Threadless earrings use a tension-fit pin. Internally threaded earrings use a screw-in stem. Both can have a flat rear disc and a smooth wearable post; the difference is the hidden connection, not the visible design.
Two ways to secure the decorative top
Threadless: tension, not threads
A slim pin enters a compatible hollow post. Correctly fitted pin tension retains the end. Depending on the maker, the pin may arrive pre-bent or need a specific off-ear adjustment. The top presses into place and separates along the post.
Internally threaded: matching screw threads
A short threaded stem on the top screws into threads inside the post. The wearable outside of the post stays smooth. For a standard right-hand connection, turn the decorative front clockwise to secure and counterclockwise to remove, viewed from the front.

Externally threaded is a different construction
Externally threaded jewelry has exposed threads on the outside of the post. Do not confuse it with an internally threaded post. For initial piercings, the Association of Professional Piercers recommends appropriate internally threaded or threadless jewelry so external screw threads do not pass through the tissue.
Threadless vs. internally threaded: at a glance
| Question | Threadless | Internally threaded |
|---|---|---|
| What holds the top? | Appropriate tension between a fitted pin and compatible post. | Matching screw threads on the top and inside the post. |
| How does it attach? | Align and press in as directed. | Align and screw in as directed. |
| How does it release? | Controlled separation along the post. | Unscrew the decorative front. |
| What must match? | Pin dimensions, post opening and stated system compatibility. | Thread diameter, pitch and stated system compatibility. |
| What needs checking? | Pin condition, full seating and suitable retention. | Smooth engagement, correct seating and secure closure. |
| Is it loss-proof? | No. | No. |
Neither closure compensates for an unsuitable gauge, post length, alloy or rough finish. Both require correctly manufactured, compatible components and an appropriate fitting.
How to tell which earring you have
Start with the listing, receipt or manufacturer information. When the jewelry is already safely separated off the ear, look at the underside of the decorative top: an unthreaded pin indicates a threadless connection; a threaded stem indicates a screw connection.

Do not diagnose the system by forcefully pulling or twisting an unfamiliar piece in your ear. A gemstone, gold color or flat disc does not identify what is inside. A piercer can assess an unknown closure and the readiness of the piercing for a change.
Are tops and posts interchangeable?
Do not assume universal compatibility. Threadless and internally threaded parts are different systems. Two threadless products may still have different pin or opening dimensions. Threaded parts need the correct diameter and thread pitch, not merely similar-looking stems.
Gauge measures the outside thickness of the wearable post, not its internal connection. Two 18G posts do not necessarily accept the same top. Check the exact manufacturer's compatibility information and test a known matching connection outside the ear.
Record the top's name or SKU, the post model, gauge and wearable length before ordering replacements. Use the flat-back size chart to distinguish the measurements, then have a piercer confirm an uncertain fit.
Do not force a push pin into a threaded post, repeatedly bend an unfamiliar pin or drive mismatched threads together. Those are component problems, not reasons to apply more pressure to the piercing.
Which system should you choose?
Choose the system that fits your piercing, the design you want and the level of handling you are comfortable with. Threadless designs may appeal when you prefer a push-in connection; internally threaded designs may suit a preference for a screw-in end. Small tops and difficult-to-reach placements can be challenging with either system.
Prioritize suitable dimensions, documented materials, smooth finish, a secure setting and clear compatibility information. For a new piercing or changes during healing, have a qualified piercer assess and fit the jewelry.
The top material and post material are separate choices
Nina Wynn flat-back listings commonly pair a 14K gold decorative top with an included titanium post; a solid-gold post may be offered separately. Check the actual listing for included components, length, gauge and quantity. An included length describes the supplied part, not a universal fit.
For a suitable healed piercing, follow the dedicated installation guide or removal guide. Keep this article as your closure-selection reference.

Frequently asked questions
Are push-pin earrings the same as threadless earrings?
Push-pin is commonly used to describe threadless jewelry. Check the actual product because an informal name is not a complete compatibility specification.
Are all flat-back earrings threadless?
No. Flat back describes the rear disc. The decorative top may connect with a tension-fit pin, internal screw threads or another design.
Are threadless earrings more secure?
Neither system is universally more secure. Manufacturing quality, compatible parts, fitting and condition matter. No closure guarantees that an end cannot be lost.
Can a threadless top screw into an internally threaded post?
No. These are different connection systems. Select a top and post specifically confirmed to work together.
Does the same gauge guarantee compatible tops?
No. Gauge describes the wearable post's outside thickness. It does not specify pin fit or the internal thread diameter and pitch.
Can I bend the pin to make any top fit?
No. An adjustment cannot make unrelated components compatible. Some pins are pre-fitted. Use manufacturer-specific guidance or a professional check.
What should I choose for a new piercing?
Have your piercer select appropriate jewelry for your anatomy and placement. Both suitable threadless and internally threaded constructions can meet professional initial-jewelry guidance when the material, finish and fit also meet requirements.
Does a 14K gold top include a gold post?
Not necessarily. Read the listing for the included post material, gauge, length and quantity. A compatible replacement or gold post may be offered separately.
Prefer help identifying your jewelry?
Have the actual top, post and fit checked rather than guessing at an unfamiliar closure. Confirm the appropriate service, studio and appointment before visiting.
