Garnet
Garnet is a group of related minerals with a shared crystal structure and differing chemistry. Common jewelry names include red pyrope and almandine, purple-red rhodolite, orange spessartine, and green tsavorite or demantoid. Many stones contain a mixture of garnet components, so the group is more varied than a single color chart suggests.
Care: For most intact garnet jewelry, a gentle hand clean with lukewarm mild soapy water is suitable if the complete setting permits. Rinse and dry carefully. Avoid steam, harsh chemicals, rough brushing, and hard impacts. If fractures or filling are present, ask for care specific to that stone; leave ultrasonic cleaning to a professional who has assessed it.
Amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its color can be uneven within a crystal, with lighter and darker zones, so the cutter’s choices influence how a finished stone looks from the front. It is a different material from purple sapphire or purple spinel, even when photographs show a similar shade.
Care: Use lukewarm water, a little mild soap, and gentle cleaning with a soft cloth or very soft brush if the setting permits. Rinse carefully and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid steam, high heat, sudden temperature changes, and extended intense light, which can affect some amethyst colors. Leave ultrasonic cleaning to a jeweler who has checked the stone and setting.
Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the greenish blue to blue variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes emerald. Its usual pastel palette is different from the saturated color people often associate with blue sapphire or blue apatite. Pale color is not, by itself, evidence of a false stone.
Care: A gentle hand clean with lukewarm mild soapy water is a sensible starting point for an intact, suitable setting. Rinse and dry carefully. Avoid harsh chemicals, high heat, and abrupt temperature changes. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner at home when inclusions, treatments, or setting condition are unknown; ask a jeweler to assess the piece first.
Topaz
Topaz is its own mineral, not a kind of quartz. Citrine is quartz; aquamarine is beryl. Similar yellow or blue colors do not make these materials identical. White topaz is colorless topaz, not diamond, and should be described by its own name rather than only as a white stone.
Care: Clean gently by hand with lukewarm mild soapy water if the mounting permits, then rinse and dry carefully. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, high heat, sudden temperature changes, and hard impacts. For coated stones, avoid abrasive rubbing and polishing that could damage the surface layer.
Emerald
Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of beryl. Aquamarine belongs to the same mineral family, but its blue palette and typical appearance are different. Very light green beryl may be described as green beryl rather than emerald; the boundary is a gemological classification question, not something a photograph alone can settle.
Care: For routine care, wipe gently with a soft cloth. When the piece’s instructions permit, clean briefly with lukewarm mild soapy water and a very soft brush, then rinse and dry carefully. Avoid prolonged soaking, steam, ultrasonic cleaning, solvents, and high heat, especially when filling or fracture condition is unknown.
Moonstone
Moonstone is a feldspar gem prized for adularescence, the billowing light produced by its internal structure. Classic moonstone contains fine intergrown feldspar layers. As the viewing angle changes, the sheen appears to move. This is an optical effect in reflected light, not a gem that generates its own light in the dark.
Care: Clean gently by hand with lukewarm mild soapy water when the setting permits, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Avoid high heat, rapid temperature changes, abrasive cleaners, and hard knocks. Moonstone’s moderate hardness does not protect it from breaking along a cleavage direction.
Freshwater Pearl
The pearls in Nina Wynn's current collection are exclusively genuine freshwater pearls. We choose them for their luminous beauty, individual character, accessible value, and availability. Genuine identifies a real pearl without suggesting an uncultured origin. Gentle handling helps preserve their soft, lustrous surface. If we introduce another pearl variety, we will identify it separately and give it its own guide.
Care: Wipe gently with a clean, very soft cloth after wear, or regularly for permanent jewelry. Protect pearls from abrasion, harsh chemicals, and excessive heat. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Follow the care instructions for the design; avoid soaking bonded mounts, and let strung jewelry dry fully before wear. Store removable pieces separately in a soft pouch. For permanent jewelry, follow your jeweler's care and safe-removal advice before swimming, household cleaning, or activities involving repeated abrasion.

Ruby
Ruby is the red variety of corundum. Sapphire belongs to the same mineral family, while red spinel and red garnet are different materials. Similar color does not make them equivalent. The line between pink sapphire and ruby can also depend on gemological color assessment rather than a simple screen image.
Care: For a ruby whose condition and treatment allow it, use lukewarm mild soapy water and gentle hand cleaning, then rinse and dry carefully. Peridot
Peridot is the gem variety of olivine. Its familiar palette is green, ranging from yellowish green to olive or brownish green. It is a different material from emerald, green tourmaline, and chrysoprase, even when a photograph makes their shades look similar.

Tourmaline

Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz. It is related to purple amethyst, but it is not topaz.
