PIERCING GUIDE

Follow the fold.

A true rook piercing passes through the raised cartilage fold in the upper inner ear. It creates a different channel and jewelry position from a faux rook, which passes front to back through nearby flat cartilage.

For Jefferson Park or Tennyson, confirm the service, studio, address and appointment time with Nina Wynn.

Where Is a Rook Piercing?

The rook sits in the folded antihelix ridge above the inner bowl of the ear. A piercer checks the depth and shape of that fold, the available space and the intended jewelry before marking the placement. Not every ear supports a comfortable true rook.

Rook vs. Faux Rook

Placement Channel Typical jewelry approach
True rook Through the raised cartilage fold A professionally selected curved barbell; other styles may suit a fully healed channel.
Faux rook Front to back through nearby flatter cartilage A fitted flat-back stud with a decorative top.

These placements can create a similar point of sparkle, but their anatomy and jewelry requirements differ. See our faux-rook guide for the stud-based alternative.

What Does a Rook Piercing Feel Like?

Pain is individual. The piercing can involve a brief sharp sensation through the cartilage fold followed by tenderness. Ask your piercer about the procedure, your anatomy and the healing commitment; a fixed pain score cannot predict your experience.

Jewelry for a True Rook

The curve, gauge, wearable length and end size must suit the fold. A straight flat-back labret intended for a faux rook is not an interchangeable substitute for a true-rook channel.

Initial jewelry is selected and fitted by a piercer. For a fully healed rook, explore compatible curved or ring-shaped styles only after the fit has been assessed. A smaller ring is not automatically a better fit.

Rook Healing & Follow-Up

Cartilage healing is a commitment measured in months, and it can take longer than the outside appearance suggests. Your piercer should assess progress before decorative jewelry changes. A fit adjustment during healing is a separate decision from changing to a ring.

Keep the channel protected from pressure and follow your piercer’s care instructions. See our aftercare guide and healing-time comparison for broader guidance.

If pain, heat, swelling or redness worsens, or you suspect infection, seek medical advice. Do not treat a problematic piercing by forcing new jewelry through it.

Rook Piercing FAQs

Can everyone get a rook piercing?

No. The shape and space in the cartilage fold determine whether the placement is appropriate. A faux rook may offer another styling approach, but it also requires individual assessment.

Can I put a flat-back stud in a true rook?

A true rook and faux rook have different channel geometry. Do not choose a straight flat-back post for a true rook simply because both names include “rook.” Ask a piercer to confirm suitable jewelry.

When can I wear a hoop in my rook?

Have a piercer assess healing and measure the channel before switching. The ring diameter, thickness, closure and ear anatomy all matter.
