April Birthstone: Diamond Meaning, Buying Guide & Jewelry

Lab Grown Diamond Stud Earrings Bezel | 14K Gold by Nina Wynn

The birthstone edit · April

Diamond is April’s birthstone. Made of crystalline carbon, it ranks 10 on the Mohs scale and is exceptionally resistant to scratching. That does not make it unbreakable. Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds both offer the material’s characteristic sparkle; their origins and disclosures differ.

What is diamond?

A diamond’s bright reflections, rainbow flashes and movement of light depend on its cutting as well as its material. A bigger stone is not automatically a more beautiful stone. Colorless diamonds are familiar, but natural diamonds also occur in pink, yellow, blue and other colors. A product described as “diamond-cut” may refer to a decorative metal finish; that wording does not establish that the jewelry contains diamonds.

Diamond meaning and history

Diamond has become a familiar symbol of lasting affection, clarity and strength. For an April birthday, that symbolism can celebrate friendship, a graduation or a promise to yourself as easily as a romantic commitment. Diamond’s name comes from an ancient Greek term associated with invincibility, but a real diamond still needs careful wear. Historically, India was an early source, followed by Brazil and the major discoveries in southern Africa.

Where does diamond come from?

Natural diamonds form through geological processes and are mined in several countries. Botswana, Canada, South Africa and Russia are among known sources. A laboratory-grown diamond is created through a technological process rather than mined as a natural diamond. Geographic origin, a laboratory report and a seller’s sourcing policy answer different questions. Ask about the specific piece rather than assuming that “natural,” “lab-grown” or a country name proves a complete ethical or environmental story.

Source regions describe the gemstone generally. They are not verified mining origins of the jewelry pictured here. Mohs hardness measures scratch resistance, not complete durability.

How to choose diamond jewelry

The 4Cs, in everyday language

Cut concerns workmanship and light performance; color describes the body color; clarity describes inclusions and blemishes; carat is weight. Shape, such as round or pear, is different from cut quality. Compare appearance, dimensions and the setting alongside any report.

Natural vs. laboratory-grown

Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. They are diamonds, with a different origin. Compare like-for-like size and quality and keep the origin disclosed. Neither category comes with a guaranteed resale value.

Understand the description

Moissanite and cubic zirconia are diamond simulants, not laboratory-grown diamonds. In earrings, total carat weight may describe both earrings together. Ask whether the item is sold as a pair or a single, and whether the listed weight is total or per stone.

Natural diamond vs. lab-grown diamond vs. simulants

Compare identity, hardness and the reason you might choose each option.
Option Identity / appearance Mohs Consideration
Natural diamond Geologically formed diamond 10 Choose when natural origin matters to you
Laboratory-grown diamond Diamond grown through a technological process 10 Choose with clear origin and quality disclosure
Diamond simulant A different material such as moissanite or CZ Depends on the material A look-alike; it should be labeled by its actual identity

Diamond jewelry ideas for an April birthday

For an April birthday gift, a pair of diamond studs is an easy place to start: ring size is unnecessary, and the sparkle works with colorful gemstones the wearer already owns. Choose yellow gold for warmth, white gold for a cooler outline or rose gold for a softer color contrast. A bezel gives a smooth frame, while a textured hoop adds another layer of interest. If the recipient already has classic studs, a diamond hoop or a necklace from our diamond collection can complement their everyday jewelry. Begin with their usual scale of jewelry rather than buying the largest stone your budget allows.

Before you choose a gift

Check metal preference, ring size where needed, and whether earrings are sold singly or as a pair. For flat-back or cartilage jewelry, confirm piercing fit with a professional. A birthstone can honor a birthday, but it can also be a favorite color worn in any month.

How to clean and care for diamond jewelry

Use mild soapy water and a soft brush to remove everyday buildup, then rinse and dry gently. Diamond’s hardness protects against scratching, but sharp impacts can chip it, especially near pointed corners. Remove rings for heavy work or weightlifting and have settings checked periodically. Store diamond pieces separately so they do not scratch each other or softer stones. Let a jeweler assess treatments and loose stones before using ultrasonic or steam equipment.

April birthstone questions, answered

What is the birthstone for April?

Diamond is the recognized April birthstone. Colorless diamonds are the classic choice, but diamond also occurs in other colors.

Can lab-grown diamonds be an April birthstone gift?

Yes. A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond with a manufactured origin. It should be clearly disclosed as laboratory-grown.

Are lab-grown diamonds the same as cubic zirconia?

No. A lab-grown diamond is diamond. Cubic zirconia is a different material used as a diamond simulant.

Can a diamond chip?

Yes. Diamond is extremely scratch-resistant, but an impact in a vulnerable direction can chip or fracture it.

What does total carat weight mean for diamond earrings?

It usually means the combined weight of the diamonds described in the listing. Check whether that total refers to a pair, one earring or all stones in a design.

Are diamond studs a good April birthday gift?

They can be a practical choice when the recipient has pierced ears and you do not know ring size. Check whether the listing is for a pair or a single.

Does diamond-cut jewelry contain diamonds?

Not necessarily. Diamond-cut can describe a faceted or textured metal finish. Read the gemstone details to confirm whether diamonds are actually set in the piece.
