What is moonstone?

Moonstone’s glow comes from light interacting with thin layers inside the feldspar. It is different from the sharp sparkle of a faceted diamond and the rainbow play-of-color of precious opal. A smooth cabochon often shows the effect well, though faceted and rose-cut moonstone are also available. Tilt a piece and look at it under more than one light: the sheen should be assessed as a moving effect rather than one frozen photograph.

Moonstone meaning and history

Moonstone’s lunar appearance has inspired associations with love, intuition and new beginnings. Ancient Greek and Roman stories connected it with the moon, and later jewelry movements embraced its soft visual character. A June birthstone gift can celebrate a fresh start without assigning supernatural properties to the gem. The personal meaning comes from the occasion and the wearer. Moonstone also provides a distinctive option when the recipient likes luminous jewelry more than conventional faceted sparkle.

Where does moonstone come from?

India and Sri Lanka are important moonstone sources. It is also found in Madagascar, Myanmar, Brazil, Tanzania and parts of the United States. A source country describes geography, not a guaranteed quality level. Traditional moonstone and material sold as rainbow moonstone also need to be distinguished: rainbow moonstone is generally transparent labradorite, another feldspar. The trade name is widely used, but it does not make the two mineral identities identical.

Source regions describe the gemstone generally. They are not verified mining origins of the jewelry pictured here. Mohs hardness measures scratch resistance, not complete durability.

How to choose moonstone jewelry

Watch the glow move

Consider the sheen’s visibility and how it sits in the mounted stone. A blue glow over a transparent body is prized, but a soft white glow or warmer body color can suit a very different style.

Ask what “rainbow moonstone” means

Rainbow moonstone is transparent labradorite in common trade usage. Ask for the actual gemstone identity rather than assuming that every moonstone trade name describes the same material. The name alone does not tell you origin or treatment.

Choose a setting for your routine

Moonstone can scratch, chip or cleave after a blow. Earrings and pendants are usually easier placements than rings. If you choose a moonstone ring, consider how much the setting protects the edges and whether you can remove it for rough activities.

Moonstone vs. pearl vs. alexandrite: three June birthstones

Compare identity, hardness and the reason you might choose each option.
Option Identity / appearance Mohs Consideration
Moonstone Moving sheen in a feldspar gem 6–6.5 A luminous June gift; protect from impact
Pearl Organic gem with a soft surface luster 2.5–3 Another June option requiring gentle care
Alexandrite Color-changing chrysoberyl 8.5 A different June birthstone with a daylight-to-incandescent color change

Moonstone jewelry ideas for a June birthday

Moonstone is especially effective when you give its glow a little visual space. A single pendant above an open neckline or a pair of silver studs can feel quietly expressive. Yellow gold warms the palette; sterling silver creates a cooler setting for the light. For a June birthday, choose earrings when ring size is uncertain, or a moonstone ring when the recipient enjoys a statement piece and understands its care. Convertible earrings let someone change their silhouette without changing the stone. If you layer necklaces, vary the lengths and keep an adjacent chain simple so the gemstone remains the focal point.

Before you choose a gift

Check metal preference, ring size where needed, and whether earrings are sold singly or as a pair. For flat-back or cartilage jewelry, confirm piercing fit with a professional. A birthstone can honor a birthday, but it can also be a favorite color worn in any month.

How to clean and care for moonstone jewelry

Clean moonstone with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush or cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Avoid high heat, sudden temperature changes and hard knocks. Remove moonstone rings for sports, lifting weights and household jobs that can strike the setting. Keep pieces in separate soft compartments so harder gems do not scratch them. Moonstone can be worn and enjoyed for years with thoughtful care, but it is not the first choice for a ring that will stay on during every activity.

June birthstone questions, answered

What are the birthstones for June?

June has three birthstones: moonstone, pearl and alexandrite. Each has a different appearance and care needs.

What causes moonstone’s glow?

Light interacts with thin internal layers in the feldspar, producing adularescence, the glow that seems to move across the surface.

Is rainbow moonstone really moonstone?

Rainbow moonstone is generally transparent labradorite, a related feldspar, in gemstone trade usage. It is a different mineral identity from traditional moonstone.

Can I wear a moonstone ring every day?

You can enjoy a moonstone ring with careful wear, but it is vulnerable to scratching and impact. Remove it for sports, gym sessions and rough tasks.

How should I clean moonstone jewelry?

Use lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush or cloth. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.

Is moonstone the same as opal?

No. Moonstone is feldspar with a moving sheen. Precious opal has a different composition and a different optical effect called play-of-color.

What moonstone jewelry makes a good June birthday gift?

Stud earrings and pendants offer the glow without needing ring size and usually receive fewer impacts than rings.
