What is ruby?
Ruby’s red is associated with chromium within corundum. Fine rubies can show a vivid red to slightly purplish red, while other examples have darker or warmer tones. Some inclusions are expected in natural ruby; they are not a universal proof of authenticity. Ruby and red spinel were historically confused, but they are different minerals. Likewise, red garnet is a separate gemstone rather than a less expensive category of ruby.
Ruby meaning and history
Ruby has long represented passion, vitality and power in cultural traditions. Its Sanskrit name has been translated as king of gems. For a July birthday, a red stone can mark affection, confidence or an energetic new chapter without needing a romantic occasion. How to choose ruby jewelry
Judge color in ordinary light
Look for the red you love and enough brightness to enjoy it when the jewelry is worn. A very dark stone can lose its visual detail, while a tiny ruby can still provide a vivid accent. View the piece from more than one angle.
Read treatment information
Heat treatment is common in ruby. Glass filling is a different treatment with more demanding care. Ask what was done to the stone and keep the disclosure in writing. “Natural ruby” describes origin; it does not mean untreated.
Do not buy by a color nickname alone
Descriptions such as pigeon’s blood can vary by seller and laboratory criteria. They should not replace identity, treatment information, dimensions and the actual appearance. Laboratory-created ruby should be labeled separately from natural ruby.
